"Love
is an incumbency that we often fail to re-elect."-Douglas
Holzmeier
Today
is President's Day - the day we honor the great Presidents of our past. It
would be interesting to know how many people actually take even one minute on
this day and truly ponder upon some of these historic figures. I mean - really
pause with reverence and contemplation about what they were able to do. Beyond
our school years - how many of us pick up a book and read about Washington -
Jefferson - Lincoln - Roosevelt (Teddy) - Roosevelt (Theodore) - and Kennedy?
I
just watched a documentary on John Kennedy. It cannot be overstated that John F.
Kennedy preserved life as we know it on this planet. During the Cuban Missile
Crisis - the United States told Khrushchev that if the ship carrying the nuclear
weapons went beyond a certain point - America would consider it an act of war
and strike Moscow. When the ship went beyond the point of no return - almost
everyone in the war room urged President Kennedy to launch.
"A
vote cast in anger elects hostility."
Had
Kennedy attacked Moscow - the world as we knew it - and know it - would not
exist. This fact cannot be embellished or exaggerated. Both countries and the
planet itself would be virtually uninhabitable. Kennedy waited a while longer.
His patience saved mankind. As it turned out - the relay of the message from the
Kremlin to the Russian ship was not received by its commander until shortly
after passing over the line drawn in the ocean. Once it was received - the ship
turned around. President Kennedy believed that the Russians loved their
children, too.
This
is what Kennedy said on October 22nd, 1962 in the midst of the
crisis:
"Our goal is
not the victory of might, but the vindication of right; not peace at the
expense of freedom, but both peace and freedom, here in this hemisphere, and,
we hope, around the world. God willing, that goal will be achieved."
A
sure sign that a leader is doing the right thing - is how mad people get when
he or she does it. Very few good leaders purposefully do things that are wrong.
A great leader does what is right - knowing that some will be very angry. In
fact - it is almost required to be considered great. This great thing is
underlined by love and compassion and it often makes the one leading unpopular
- for a time. No transcendent leader maintains a high level of popularity. A
brilliant leader will anger their own base from time to time because their
ideology has just as many holes in it as the opposition. Jesus - Joan of Arc and John Lennon -
and many others - were crucified because they believed in peace - love and
understanding - while statutes and monuments were erected for dictators who
have the blood of millions on their hands. (Most of which have been torn down
in time)
"A
follower is led by needs; a leader - by opportunity."
Very
few of us will ever be the President of the United States. Of course - you lead
your life - and you should be led by love in order to see possibility and
opportunity. If your focus is on what is missing
(need) then you may miss manifesting what could be. Robert Kennedy paraphrased
George Bernard Shaw and said: You see things;
and you say, 'Why?' But I dream things that never were; and I say, 'Why
not?'" At Bobby's funeral - Teddy Kennedy paraphrased his brother and
said: "Some men see things as they are and say why? I dream things that never
were and say why not?" It was John who saw
the United States landing on the moon when almost no other - including the
brass at NASA - could conceive the same.
"Great
Visions begin with great Missions. We went to the moon
to
prove we could - to express our Divinity."
"Your
success is not measured by the number of followers you
have,
but where you have led."
Where
are you leading today? Take some time to formulate your mission by clearing
your vision. When I meditate or pray I continue
until I see a blue sky - a wide and uncluttered path - blue birds and bunnies
and sunshine and a slight breeze. It is only then that I have a clear
consciousness and I am able to visualize what it is I want to create in Mind.
If you are in a leadership position - you owe it to your organization to have a
crystal clear view of the goal and the path to get there. You don't have to
know all of the hows. Kennedy didn't have a clue how we were going to get to
the moon - yet knew we were going. This is leadership and it is what we honor
on President's Day - the vision and the visionaries.
"When
you can see the big picture, you'll never be framed by
those
with limited views."
Most
of the truly great Presidents and leaders were recognized as such well after
their farewell. Harry Truman had terrible approval ratings at the time he left
office but has - for many years - been considered one of the all-time greats.
If you're looking to be applauded in a parade - don a clown suit. If you want
to change the world - be prepared to dodge tomatoes.
"We
will be looked upon most favorably when the last person
who
ever knew us closes their eyes."
It
isn't the most popular who change the world - it is altered by those who
contest their anonymity and elect themselves.
